Smart approaches how to convert INDD to NEF

The INDD format is very popular with users who need extensive design capabilities. If you're working with INDD files on a project, you may need to be able to convert them quickly and efficiently. If you want to convert INDD to NEF, this quick guide is for you. But first, we'll give you a brief overview of the two file types.

What are INDD image formats?

The InDesign file extension (.indd) is the standard format for project files in Adobe's design software. INDD files contain many different elements, such as page information and layouts.

InDesign image formats are typically used by organizations that use extensive design tools and features. INDD files are typically used to store things like flyers and digital magazines. Users can add or change text to the project without changing the overall design.

What is the NEF image format?

An NEF image file is the standard file format for all images taken with a Nikon camera. The abbreviation NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format. This is a raw image format, meaning that the original image has not been processed or altered.

The NEF image format is mainly used by professional photographers. If you want to share an album of NEF images or upload them to the Internet, the images are usually converted to smaller files first.

Is it possible to convert INDD to NEF?

In theory, the conversion may seem reasonable. However, since NEF files have a very high resolution, you can't really do the conversion.

NEFs are the direct result of a photo uploaded from a camera to a computer. The format serves as a way for users to transfer shots from their Nikon cameras to a digital format. Therefore, it is not possible to convert from INDD format to NEF format. Fortunately, this type of conversion is not practical anyway. And this is the reason why.

NEFs are raw image files, the digitized version of a real photo shoot. Because NEF files are so high resolution, some users mistakenly believe that INDD files can be converted to this format, giving them the same quality. Of course, this is not true. Fortunately, there are many alternatives that offer equivalent quality.

What are the alternatives?

If you want to convert to NEF format, you are probably looking for a file format with high resolution. This isn't easy, but a few alternatives come close.

The PNG file format is extremely high-resolution and retains most of the image quality. Also, PNG files are much more accessible than NEF files, making them easier to share with others. And this is how you convert from INDD to PNG.

First, you need access to both Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. If you don't have access to either, we recommend a free trial version for a one-time conversion.

Open the desired file in InDesign, select 'Export' from the 'File' menu and set the desired output format to 'EPS'. Now open the EPS file in Illustrator. Here you can now simply save the file as a PNG image.

This method is not a direct conversion, but it is a good workaround if you need the new file type for a project.

While INDD files cannot be converted directly to NEF format, you still have alternatives available. Check which other image formats are suitable for your needs and use them as substitutes.
